DIY: Almond/Stiletto Nails

3/18/2014

Welcome! Get the look: Stiletto Nails

I've been MIA for the past week on a medical mission trip in El Paso, Texas. I'm still exhausted, yet ever so grateful to have bonded with some incredible people, and had the opportunity to touch the lives of patients in dire need. For that, and so much more I give God the glory! I will therefore make a special post with trip pictures and such in an upcoming post so stay tuned!

As for now, I'd like to share with you one of my favorite, budget friendly, diva-lious DIY projects: almond/stiletto nails. Rihanna and countless other celebrities have been caught rocking this look, and I of course wanted a similar look for a fraction of the price. I went to my local supermarket/drugstore and got to work. Here's what you'll need to achieve this look.

What You'll Need

  • Fake full cover nails – Oval (Brands: Kiss, Nailene, etc)
  • Nail glue
  • Nail filer
  • Nail Cutter
  • Nail polish remover
  • Nail polish(s)
  • Top/base coat nail polish
  • Cotton balls
  • Q-Tips

Here are the steps I take to achieve this look. Next time I will take step by step pictures so you all can see what each step looks like. I’ve also attached a few YouTube videos for my audio visual gals! Shout out to The NotriousKIA who inspired me. Enjoy!

Step 1: Match fake nails to real nails.
This step is imperative. Matching, ensures that the fake nail is an appropriate size for your real nail, therefore covering your nail fully. If given the choice, go for a fake nail that’s a bit bigger than your real nail, because you can always cut off excess.

Step 2: Wash and clean your nails.
Fake nails have been fit, now make sure they have a clean dry surface to adhere to.

Step 3: Glue fake nail to real nail
Add sufficient nail glue to both your real nail and the fake nail. Press for about 10 seconds to fully bond. Repeat on all nails.

Step 4: Cut and shape fake nails
Now that the fake nails are bonded to your real nails, it’s time to cut and shape. Use both the nail cutter and filer to shape the nails into the pointed/stiletto look you desire. Use the filer to round out the tips for a more almond shape look, or to create a point for a more claw like shape.

Step 5: Paint!
Dust off any excess debris, clean off nails with a damp towel, it’s time to paint. Pick your nail polish(s) and apply at least 2 even coats. Fix the edges and sides with nail polish remover. Add a clear top coat, and let nails dry for a clean, salon inspired finish.

The End!
